Born in Columbus, Ohio, Sumi Ichikawa has been dancing with BalletMet Academy since the age of six. Under the direction of the Academy Director Maria Torija, Sumi would later go on to join BalletMet’s trainee program at age fifteen. She spent the next three years training and performing roles such as Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and Zulma in Giselle, Swanilda in Coppelia. She also performed in Balanchine ballets such as Second Movement Principal in Western Symphony, Demi-Soloist in Walpurgisnacht, and Corps de Ballet in Serenade. Sumi has also performed in company roles with BalletMet including Gerard Charles’ The Nutcracker, Edwaard Liang’s Giselle, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland and Twisted 3. She has also competed in YAGP 2022 representing the BalletMet Academy and placed within the top 12. Sumi is very excited to start a new chapter in her life as a BalletMet 2 dancer.
