Ms. Posin studied composition with Louis Horst, Anna Sokolow, Merce Cunningham and Hanya Holm. She began receiving choreographic commissions in 1975 when the American Dance Festival commissioned Waves. She has choreographed works for Ballet West, Nederlans Dance Theater 1 and 2, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Elliot Feld Ballet, Ohio Ballet, Repertory Dance Theater of Utah, Extemporary Dance Company of London, Cincinnati Ballet and the Milwaukee Ballet. She was the first international choreographer to stage a work for Cloud Gate Dance Theater, the national company of Taiwan, in 1992.

In Theater, she choreographed the hit rock musical Salvation and The Cherry Orchard as Lincoln Center, directed by Andre Serban. She has choreographed plays at American Repertory Theater at Harvard, at Arena Stage, for the Acting Company with Liviu Cuilei as director, and at the Hartford Stage with Yuri Yurimen of the Pushkin Theater in Moscow as director.

For her own company, Kathryn Posin Dance Company, which she founded in 1972, Ms. Posin has choreographed over 50 works. The company has received support form the Guggenheim Foundation, The New York State Council on the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts and the Jerome Robbins Foundation. In 1991 the Kathryn Posin Dance Company received two grants from the Joint Program of the Ohio Arts and Humanities Councils for the Appalachian Dance/Music work, Shady Grove.

Her 1990 work for the Milwaukee Ballet, Of Rage and Remembrance, to John Corigliano's Symphony No. 1., was voted "Premiere of the year in music and dance" by the Milwaukee Journal. She has received two awards from Meet the Composer, Stepping Stones with Joan Tower, and one with Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos for the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble in 1995. Her comedy hit, Bach's Lunch was developed for the Milwaukee Ballet School and was the first work in 20 years that was immediately taken into the repertoire of the professional company.

Kathryn Posin was born March 23, 1945, in Butte Montana, she is a graduate of Bennington College, and holds an M.A. in interdisciplinary multi-cultural dance from NYU. Before pursuing her career as a choreographer Ms. Posin was a member of Anna Sokolow Dance Company and Valerie Bettis Dance Company. She has also taught at the Harvard Summer Dance Center (1984), at UCLA (1986-88), and was artist in residence at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, (1984-86).

She is a recipient of a 1995-96 National Endowment for the Arts Choreographic Fellowship and was the winner of the Sarasota Ballet Choreography Competition. In 1998 she was named as the founding chair of the Joffrey/New School BFA program in New York. She continues to pursue her choreographic endeavors and this season creates two new works for Milwaukee Ballet and on for the Sacramento Ballet as well as overseeing the restaging of existing works.
