BalletMet Company Dancer, Choreographer

Leiland Charles was born in Baltimore, Md.  He first stepped into a dance studio at the age of three with The Howard County Ballet in Ellicott City, Md. under the direction of Kathi Ferguson.  Throughout his training, he attended summer dance programs at The Rock School for Dance Education and Springboard Danse Montréal. Leiland furthered his artistic training at The Juilliard School where he received his BFA in spring 2014.  While at Juilliard, he performed works by Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Twyla Tharp, Alexander Ekman and many others.  He has gone on tour with Juilliard Dance to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform in the International Festival and was featured in the March 2013 issue of Dance Teacher Magazine with world-renowned anatomy professor, Irene Dowd. Upon graduation, Mr. Charles joined Alberta Ballet in Calgary, Canada, dancing numerous soloist and principal roles including the Cavalier in Edmund Stripe’s The Nutcracker and Benvolio in Jean Grand-Maître’s Romeo & Juliet.  After three seasons with Alberta Ballet, Mr. Charles joined BalletMet in 2017. Some of his favorite works with BalletMet include William Forsythe’s Slingerland Pas De Deux, George Balanchine’s Rubies, and the solo male part in Justin Peck’s In Creases.

Kelly Ganley

Lighting Designer

Kelly holds a BFA from Otterbein University in Design/Technology. After graduating Kelly worked at Columbus Commons Bicentennial Pavilion as the Stage and Park Electrician until 2019. During that time she also worked as adjunct lighting faculty at Otterbein University and worked various productions in the Columbus area. Currently, she is Head Carpenter for the Jo-Ann Davidson Theatre.  Kelly would like to thank Judy Barto for challenging and mentoring her, and her Mom for always supporting her.

Gabriel Gaffney Smith

Gabriel Gaffney Smith

American Artist

Gabriel Gaffney Smith (American Artist, b.1985) is a modern-day renaissance man with an artistic resumé spanning multiple mediums.  Raised in beautiful upstate New York, Smith began dancing at Saugerties Ballet Center at the age of 12.  After completing his training at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater school, he was asked to join the company in 2005.  Gabriel then joined BalletMet in 2008 where he continued his career under the directorship of Gerard Charles and Edwaard Liang.  As an accomplished fine artist, Smith’s intricate wood carvings have been showcased in museums, private collections, and galleries across the country. Karen Wing

Karen Wing began her dance training at Petaluma School of Ballet.  Ms. Wing continued her education at the University of California-Irvine, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in June 2013 with a BFA in Dance Performance and a minor in Business Management.  While in college, she worked extensively with Donald McKayle and Jodie Gates, and was selected to be a part of Molly Lynch’s National Choreographers Initiative in 2011, 2012 and 2014.  Ms. Wing danced for the Sacramento Ballet for one season before joining BalletMet in 2014. Ms. Wing has had the pleasure of performing works by choreographers such as Edwaard Liang, Ma Cong, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, James Kudelka, Matthew Neenan, Val Caniparoli, Trey McIntyre, Andi Schermoly, Christopher Wheeldon, Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, and Ohad Naharin.  In 2015, Ms. Wing was selected to be one of Pointe Magazine’s “2015 Stars of the Corps”, and in 2016, Pointe recognized her performance in Carmen.maquia as one of the standout performances of the year.
