The Story of Sleeping Beauty

The tale of Sleeping Beauty, known for its enchanting storyline and timeless appeal, has captivated audiences for generations. This beloved story, filled with magic, love, and the triumph of good over evil, has been retold in various forms, from classic literature to film adaptations such as the beloved Disney version (released in 1959) that we all grew up with. In this blog, we dive into the story of the Sleeping Beauty ballet, set to the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky.

Prologue

King Florestan calls for the christening of his daughter, Princess Aurora. The faires, most notably the Lilac Fairy, are invited to the ceremony and bestow gifts on the Princess. All is well until the arrival of Carabosse, a wicked fairy who is angry with the King for not inviting her to the christening. She places an evil curse on the Princess, condemning her to die on her 16th birthday at the prick of her finger.

Luckily, the Lilac Fairy intervenes. Though unable to reverse Carabosse’s curse, she declares Princess Aurora will not die on her 16th birthday, but instead will fall into a 100-year slumber, after which she’ll be awoken by the kiss of a prince.

Act I

It’s the 16th Birthday of Princess Aurora, and all are invited to celebrate. Townsfolk dance with flower garlands, and four suitors present roses to the Princess in the Rose Adagio, signifying her coming of age.

A mysterious figure emerges and offers a gift to the Princess. As predicted, she pricks her finger and collapses into a deep sleep. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts a spell of slumber over the kingdom, which will only be broken when the Princess wakes.

Act II

One hundred years have gone by. As Prince Florimund and his friends are hunting, the Lilac Fairy appears. She presents a vision of Princess Aurora to the Prince and offers to take him to the Princess. He readily agrees. Upon arrival, the Prince moves toward Princess Aurora. He kisses her, and she wakes from her sleep. The Princess and Prince prepare to be married.

Act III

At the wedding celebration, characters from near and far arrive to join in the merriment, including the White Cat, Puss in Boots, the Bluebird, and more.

Princess Aurora and the Prince dance together, symbolizing a lifetime of happiness.
