Dance on Mount Vernon presents BalletMet 2 dancers in a diverse arrangement of works offering socially conscious, thought-provoking dance in the intimate setting of BalletMet’s black box Performance Space. The program also features students from The Ohio State University Department of Dance and solo performances by BalletMet Dance Academy students.
Two works by BalletMet Artistic Director Edwaard Liang display a range of emotions and complete technical range, from the exquisite lines of classical ballet in a selection from Cinderella, to his contemporary dance staged for BalletMet 2, Whispers in the Dark. Works from two iconic American choreographers grapple with the painful legacies of historical conflict and injustice, using intense, powerful movement to reflect experiences still relevant to us today. Donald McKayle created socially conscious dance focused on the Black experience; his Rainbow Etude is a solo depicting life in a chain gang. BalletMet 2 dancers will join students from The Ohio State University Department of Dance to perform Martha Graham’s Steps in the Street, which is presented with permission of The Martha Graham Dance Company. This early Graham work reflects the chaos and tragedy of war and its consequences, a response to the rise of fascism.
