Gerard Charles Looks Back On 20 Years of The Nutcracker

Looking Back on The Nutcracker

For two decades, Gerard Charles’ The Nutcracker has been a cherished holiday tradition for families and communities across the state of Ohio. Celebrating its 20th season, Gerard Charles, choreographer and co-creator of this timeless production, reflects on its evolution, the creative process, and the magic it brings to audiences every year.

A Vision Rooted in Tradition

When first envisioning The Nutcracker, Gerard aimed to balance tradition with accessibility. “You’ve got to have the mice, the growing tree, the magic, and the beautiful snow scene,” he explains. These iconic elements were essential to meeting audience expectations.

However, Gerard didn’t stop at tradition. Collaborating with Robert Post, he listened to audience feedback and observed recurring gaps in how people connected with the story. “It was interesting to hear how some long-time fans loved the ballet but had holes in their understanding of the characters. That guided us to make those connections clearer for everyone, even those who might only attend once a year,” he says.

Restaging with Fresh Eyes

Returning to the production 20 years later, Gerard embraced the opportunity to refine his work.

Some things worked so well they were a pleasant surprise, while others made me wonder why I hadn’t noticed issues before.

A key aspect of restaging has been adapting the choreography to highlight the strengths of the current cast. “It’s about making it personal for the dancers and involving them in shaping their roles. It’s a conversation in rehearsal—what’s in my head and what’s in theirs—to find common ground.”

The production also benefits from technological advancements, like LED lighting, which weren’t available when it first premiered. These updates enhance the show’s technical aspects while preserving its timeless aesthetic.

Preserving Legacy While Embracing Change

Gerard recognizes that The Nutcracker holds a deep emotional connection for many. “It’s a tradition with families,” he notes, recounting how his own son struggled to enjoy a different city’s production because it wasn’t “his Nutcracker.”

While Gerard believes in introducing subtle updates—whether a new piece of scenery or choreography that resonates with today’s audiences—he emphasizes maintaining the heart of the original production! “The goal is to reflect the present while staying true to the concept that makes it so beloved,” he says.

The Magic Lives On

For Gerard, The Nutcracker is more than a production—it’s a part of his life as a performer, choreographer, and director. Though the music often plays on repeat from September through the holidays, one scene always rekindles his passion: the Waltz of the Snowflakes. “That music is so inspiring, and I’m proud of that choreography. It’s always wonderful to see it performed,” he says.

Despite the demanding schedule, Gerard finds immense joy in knowing his work is central to the holiday traditions of countless families. “As performers, we don’t have long holidays with our families—we go to the theater. But it’s a thrill to be part of the holiday celebrations of the entire community,” he reflects.

A Timeless Celebration

As The Nutcracker enters its 20th season, it remains a testament to the enduring magic of ballet. Gerard Charles’s thoughtful approach to storytelling and collaboration ensures that this beloved production continues to captivate audiences for generations to come.
