Meet all of the characters from The Nutcracker before you see the holiday favorite
It’s that time of year again. The music is playing, the snow is getting ready to fall, and The Nutcracker is coming back to the Ohio Theatre. This annual tradition is a staple of our BalletMet season year after year. Meet Clara, the brave young girl, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, the Nutcracker Prince himself, and the other most recognizable characters in ballet below.
Young Clara
A young girl who experiences a magical Christmas journey that begins on Christmas Eve with a family party.
Uncle Drosselmeyer
Clara’s Godfather, an accomplished toy and clock maker. He gives her the Nutcracker as a Christmas present. “Herr” means “Mister” in German.
Grown Up Clara
Clara emerges after the battle with the Mouse King having grown up and travels through the Land of Sweets with the Nutcracker Prince.
Dancing and Warrior Doll
Gifts given to Clara and her brother Fritz from Herr Drosselmeyer.
Mouse King
The mischievous King of the Mice. The Mouse King declares war on the Nutcracker and his soldiers and and epic battle ensues.
Nutcracker Prince
Clara’s doll, come to life! The prince of the dreamlike land of sweets. The Nutcracker prince accompanies Grown-Up Clara on her journey through the Land of Sweets.
Sugar Plum Fairy
The queen of the land of sweets, named for a type of candy. She resembles Clara’s mother. The Sugar Plum Fairy, after hearing of how Clara rescued the Nutcracker Prince, throws a grand celebration in her honor that includes dances by some of our favorite characters such as Mother Ginger.
Cavalier
The partner of the Sugar Plum Fairy. He resembles Clara’s father.

This year, BalletMet is offering two chances to experience the sensory-friendly My First Nutcracker. This just-the-right-length ballet is the perfect choice for our youngest fans and any child who may prefer a shorter, less crowded, and more casual environment.
